The Skinny:
Age restrictions: 18+
Where to buy: The Provincial Government will control online sales, but will allow over-the-counter sales by private-owned stores and will not limit the number of stores. The Alberta government assumes there will be 250 stores in the first year. No person or entity can hold more than 15 per cent of retail cannabis license, which would come to 37 stores. The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission will be responsible for oversight of private retail. Dispensaries must be 100 metres from schools, hospitals and one another. Stores will have to be physically separate from stores that sell alcohol, tobacco or pharmaceuticals. No one under 18 may enter a retail cannabis store. Cannabis lounges and cafés will be banned at first — although the province has said it will review that at a later date.
Home Grow: Up to four plants, subject to restrictions from landlords.
Where to consume: Prohibited in cars, in areas frequented by children, and wherever tobacco is restricted. Carry limit is 30 grams. In the province’s capital, Calgary, it will likely be illegal to smoke outdoors and landlords are given discretion to ban consumption by their tenants.
